The Gap of Dunloe is not a valley carved by rivers. It is a glacial breach, gouged some 25,000 years ago when ice ground a corridor between Purple Mountain and the sandstone flanks of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks — Ireland's highest range, crowned by Carrauntoohil at 1,038 metres. The result is roughly eleven kilometres of single-track road, five small lakes strung along its floor, and the arched stone span of the Wishing Bridge at the midpoint. The route was a drovers' path long before it was a scenic one. Turf was cut here. Cattle were walked through. The English name derives from the Irish Bearna an Choimín, the gap of the common land, and the surrounding townlands remained Irish-speaking well into the nineteenth century. Tourism arrived with the Victorians: Killarney's rail link opened in 1853, and within two decades the pass had become a fixed stop on the Grand Tour of the south-west. Queen Victoria's 1861 visit to Killarney cemented its reputation. The gap of dunloe bus and boat tour, in its earliest form, dates from that period — visitors were carried by trap to Kate Kearney's Cottage, walked or rode the pass, then rowed home across the Lakes of Killarney. That structure survives almost unchanged. Modern gap of dunloe bus and boat tour tours still descend into the Black Valley, meet open boats at Lord Brandon's Cottage, and pass through the Long Range river into Upper Lake, Muckross Lake and Lough Leane. The boats thread the Old Weir Bridge at Meeting of the Waters, a shallow rapid where crews traditionally shoot the current rather than row against it. What gives the corridor its standing today is protection. Killarney National Park, established in 1932 from the Muckross Estate bequest, was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1982 — the first in Ireland. Its oak woods at Derrycunnihy are among the last semi-natural stands in the country. Red deer have grazed the uplands continuously since the last glaciation, an unbroken native herd found nowhere else in Ireland. Arbutus unedo, the strawberry tree, grows here at the northern edge of its Lusitanian range. The road itself remains public and free to walk, drive or cycle at any hour. No gate, no ticket, no fee — 0 EUR, as it has always been. Ticketing applies only to the transport: the coaches, the jaunting cars, the lake boats. The pass keeps its old indifference to visitors, and to weather, which arrives here from the Atlantic with little warning.
